I've always been drawn to making things - taking an idea, working out how it could exist, and figuring out how to build it.
That curiosity led me to study Industrial Design, before moving into soft goods and the outdoor industry. I spent several years in product design and development, working in consultancy and with some of the biggest names in the outdoor industry.
Working at that scale taught me a lot about how products are designed and manufactured, but it also made me question what we were making. The pressure is often towards faster, cheaper and more disposable products. I found myself drawn towards the opposite: making fewer things, with more thought given to how they work, how they're made, and how long they'll last.
That became one of the foundations for Ransley. I wanted to use what I'd learnt to make products on our own terms; things designed to be used hard and kept for a long time.
Outside the workshop, you'll usually find me running, hiking or riding around the Pennines. Spending so much time outdoors inevitably influences the things I design.
Ransley brings those two worlds together: a career in product design and a personal obsession with being outside.
